‍PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Thanks to a group of Italians and Italophiles, next year we’ll be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the chartering of the Dante Alighieri Society of Denver. Their foresight and leadership continues to ensure that the Society maintains and carries out its mission. Sadly, we recently lost one of our founding members, Gianfranco Marcantonio. With his passing, we have lost not only a patriarch but also a historian who dedicated much of his time to keeping, cataloging and sharing the history of the Dante Alighieri Society. In his honor, in honor of all the founders who went before him, and for those who are still with us, we will continue to “share and celebrate the richness of the Italian culture with the entire community”.

Grazie, John Giardino

CULTURAL MEETING

VIVA VERDI: FRIDAY, JUNE 14 - 7:00 pm
(Please note earlier start time.)

The Risorgimento and the Composer

Program by Betsy Schwarm, noted classical music historian.
Giuseppe Verdi was Italy’s superstar composer of the 19th century. The Risorgimento was Italy’s decades-long drive toward independence and unity. What would bring together great music and revolutionary determination? Classical music historian Betsy Schwarm explores the subject. She’ll start with an encapsuled view of the Risorgimento and its major figures, then consider the operatic master’s involvement in the effort. What were Verdi’s own views? How did his music express those ideas? Why did the Italian people come to regard him as a musical spokesman? Betsy will bring the issue to life with a generous supply of music and videos.

LOCATION: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Parish Hall
ADDRESS: 3549 Navajo St, Denver, CO 80211
Refreshments and social time will follow.

The 2024 Donne di Merito Award went to Jenna Capra, Editor and Publisher of Andiamo!, a monthly newspaper serving the Denver Metropolitan area. Joining her at the Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici and also from the University of Denver will be Pippa Graham, winner of a Dante Alighieri Society Scholarship. STIPS ON ITALY by Tonya Clement

When I travel to Italy, I love that almost everywhere you go and from everyone you meet, you will receive a very nice greeting of "Buon giorno" or "Buona sera". I always respond by returning the exact words, which is fine and completely appropriate. However, sometimes you will hear "Buona gornata" or "Buona serata". These expressions are not simple greetings but can be translated as "Have a nice day" and "Have a nice evening".

What is the best way to respond to these expressions? Here are a few ideas:

  • Grazie, altrettanto! (Thank you, and the same to you! or Likewise!)
  • Anche a te! (To you as well)
  • Anche a Lei! (To you as well, [if you do not know the person well])
  • E a te/Lei! (And to you!)

So remember:

  • Buon giorno = Good day, Hello (during the day)
  • Buona giornata = Have a nice day. This is not a greeting but something you might say as you are taking leave of someone early in the day before you both start out.

The same difference exists between the following:

• Buona sera = Good evening, Hello (during the evening hours)
• Buona serata = Have a nice evening. This is not a greeting but something you might say as someone is heading out for the evening.

SAVE THE DATE!
