Cultural program: Through the Eyes of Innocence
Friday, April 12, 2024, 07:30pm

celebrating italian women's voicesChildhood Memories and Italian Historical Realities

Through the eyes of innocence, the Italian Jewish authors Liliana Segre, Clara Sereni and Lia Levi (and their Catholic contemporary, Rosetta Loy) document the prejudice and horrific events of fascism and the Holocaust in Italy. Using the perspective of a child, these authors examine the theme of prejudice, and whether it is innate—or learned. In this thesis presented by Sophie Thomas, it is argued that the literature presents the compelling case that prejudice is not innate, but learned. Through an exploration of the common theme of childhood memory in unprecedented times, a connection is drawn between the authors Segre, Sereni, Levi, and Loy to paint a picture of the historical realities of fascism and WWII-era Italy.”
