November cultural program: A tribute to the life and career of Giacomo Puccini
If Giacomo Puccini (1856 – 1924) had followed the expectations of his family, he would have pursued a long career in church music. That’s what the Puccinis had done in Lucca for well over a century. But a short time in the organ loft proved to be enough. Before he was far into his twenties, Puccini had fallen under the spell of opera. Classical music historian Betsy Schwarm honors the centenary of the composer’s passing with insights into his life and career, a sampling of his works – both the famous and the lesser known – and a taste of his Messa di Gloria. It predates all twelve of his operas, and ‘glorious’ is exactly the right word for it!
